WESTBROOK – Westbrook High School has announced the hiring of Michael Burke as the new coach of the varsity boys basketball team.
Burke replaces Mark Karter, who stepped down after 21 years at Westbrook to take the head coaching job in Gorham.
Burke was most recently the junior varsity boys basketball coach at South Portland High School, the 2012-2013 Western Maine Basketball champions. In addition to his duties with the South Portland basketball program, Burke also serves as an assistant on the South Portland varsity baseball team and is the defensive coordinator for the Westbrook High School varsity football team. He is a sixth-grade teacher at Westbrook Middle School
“Although Coach Burke has a passion for athletics, he separated himself as a candidate with his commitment to the classroom and education of all children,” Athletic Director Marc Sawyer said in a press release. “Mr. Burke embodies perseverance, aspirations, and integrity, the core values that make up Westbrook High School. His philosophy of doing the right things, coupled with a strong focus on family, academics, and accountability are the fiber of any quality organization.”
Burke is 1997 graduate of Gorham High School, where he played for coaching legend Kevin Jenkins and later graduated from Hamden-Sydney College with a bachelor of arts degree in History. He resides in Old Orchard with his wife Jackie and their newborn daughter Victoria.
