Warren theater offering classes
Warren Kids & Teens TheaterWorks is offering its 14th season of theater classes.
The program is offering a new session of theater classes for children and teens. Taught by local actor and Warren Kids instructor David LaGraffe, the classes include three separate sessions for ages 6-8, 9-12 and 13-18.
The youngest group can participate in Creative Dramatics from 4-5 p.m. on Mondays, Sept. 18 through Nov. 13. Through a variety of games and exercises based on the work of Viola Spolin, the class encourages students to explore their imaginary world while gradually developing the ability to share their experiences with an audience.
For the middle group, Warren Kids is offering On Stage, from 9-10:30 a.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 23 through Nov. 18. Students will learn how to translate the elements of story (who, what, where and when) into an expanding palette of physical sensations and emotions and then communicate them clearly to an audience.
Actors Workshop for the older group will be 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 23 through Nov. 18. Through improvisation, theater games and script work, students will explore the connection between emotion, intention and character, and learn how to develop the trust at the heart of strong performances.
Classes will be held at Warren Memorial Library, 479 Main St. and will culminate with a student showcase on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 1-2:30 p.m.
The program is being offered for a sliding-scale fee of between $30 and $75, and scholarships are available. For more information or to register, contact the theater at 650-3789 or P.O. Box 282, Westbrook, Maine, 04098; or at warrenkidsandteens@yahoo.com

Goan sweeps track events
Keegan Goan, 14, swept throwing events, javelin, discus and shot put, winning the state championship and gold medal in all three at the Junior Olympic summer track program on Aug. 11 at Cony High School.
He is the son of Greg and Nancy Goan.
The state competition marked a special day, as it was his final at that level. He has been in the program since age 5.
Turbo javelin is his favorite. He has won five state championships in that event, and had a second and third in seven years of official competition.
He also has set two state records. The most recent was at the state qualifying meet on Aug. 3 at Gorham High School, where he eclipsed the former mark by more than 31 feet with a throw of 192 feet, 5 inches.
Topping this year’s state meet, Goan’s throw was 181 feet.
In the discus, he won the gold with a 119-foot throw.
He captured the shot put with a 39-foot, 6-inch throw to complete the sweep in the throwing events. He improved his previous best by more than 3 feet.
