Woman’s Club blanket benefit

Guest speaker Susan Kirk, Southern Maine coordinator for Project Linus, spoke recently to the Westbrook Woman’s Club about her work providing “blanket hugs” to children, who would benefit from a little extra warmth or comfort.

The mission of Project Linus, a national, nonprofit organization, is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”

Club members made and presented nine fleece blankets to Kirk to benefit children. In southern and central Maine, 1,308 children received blankets in 2006.

Refreshments were served following the club’s blanket workshop by Kay Mosher, Glenna Carter, Judith Getchell, Barbara Libby, Mary Libby and Roberta Morrill.

Marion Broaddus will present a book review at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, when the club meets next at Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church. She’ll speak about “More Than Petticoats – Remarkable Maine Women,” by Kate Kennedy.

Guests are welcome.

Fears for ducks

Candy Oliver of Gorham is worried about the plight of the multitude of wild ducks in the Presumpscot River as the cold spell continues.

Last week, Oliver was alarmed after finding two dead ducks at Riverbank Park. She feared that people, who had regularly fed the ducks, had stopped. So, she bought cracked corn and broadcasted it along the bank near the river.
