GB&CE reception benefits ‘holiday cheer’
The Gorham Business & Civic Exchange will be supporting Operation Holiday Cheer at its annual holiday reception at Pheasant Knoll model homes on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 5-7 p.m.
All members and guests are invited to take a monetary donation, which will go to Operation Holiday Cheer. The charity was started by the Kiwanis Club of Gorham as an effort to provide holiday gifts to the children of Maine’s military families. More than 9,000 children in Maine have a parent who serves in the military during the holidays.
“Peter Mason of PO-GO Realty will have a tree at the reception so each participant making a monetary donation will receive an ornament to hang. It will be heartwarming to watch the tree being decorated this way”, Dana Redmond, executive director, said.
“Every year we choose a local cause to benefit, and this year the exchange has selected Operation Holiday Cheer, a statewide program started right here in Gorham, headed by one of our GB&CE members, Marc Badeau,” Redmond said.
According to Badeau, Kiwanis president, “Every child will receive a very nice gift. Regardless of your beliefs about the war, we think you’ll agree that these children deserve our show of support and appreciation while their moms or dads are away.”
Pheasant Knoll is located in Gorham, off Rte 114, close to the University of Southern Maine. Po-Go Realty will be hosting and serving appetizers, treats and beverages. Nappi Distributors is providing the holiday cheer, and there is no charge to attend.

Art exhibit opens Nov. 27
The University of Southern Maine Art Gallery in Gorham is presenting an all-inclusive student art exhibit Nov. 27-Dec. 16, with an opening reception Thursday, Nov. 29, from 5-7 p.m., at the gallery.
The exhibit provides an overview of the studio programming of the USM Art Department, and also familiarizes students with the gallery and the process of exhibiting artwork. This year, each professor of a studio course was asked to select up to two works that best represented the goals of the course. The show encompasses a variety of eclectic styles and approaches in photography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, drawing, ceramics, etc.
Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 1-5 p.m.
Turkey shoot reminder
The Gorham-Windham Rod and Gun Club’s turkey shoot is 5-8 p.m. on Saturday at its headquarters, 8 Towpath Road, Gorham. The event includes a raffle, games and prizes. Snacks and soda will be available.
U.S. taxpayer debt
The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Nov. 7 that the U.S. public debt was $9,084,273,781,557.64.
