This year The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was bestowed on three Maine women, each receiving the bronze medal, at the annual Miss Maine Scholarship Competition on June 21, 2013 at the Crooker Theater at Brunswick High School. They were Katie Elliott of Scarborough, Emily Baker of Topsham, and Katarina Pinet of Bangor. Pictured are, from left, Pinet, Julia Furtado (Miss Maine 2011), Elliott (Miss Maine’s Outstanding Teen 2012), and Baker. The award, bestowed by Great Britain’s Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, began in 1956 and demonstrates activities in four areas: community service, special skills (talent), physical fitness, and adventurous journey (environment and teamwork). The award itself has three levels: bronze, silver, and gold. To obtain an award, participants age 14-25 must demonstrate achievement at the appropriate level in various activities in the four sections.
