The Cape boys successfully defended their Class B State Championship at Lewiston High School on Saturday, in a rematch of last year’s final with Camden Hills. In 2014, the Capers swept the Windjammers 5-0; this year was a hair closer at 4-1.
That’s still impressive, considering 2015 had Cape doing a bit of rebuilding.
“Having to rebuild this year, I’m very proud of this group of kids,” said head coach Andy Strout.
With five seniors and two juniors, the team will have to rebuild all over again next year. No doubt they’ll take it in stride.
In the first singles match, Cape’s Mike Mills defeated Camden Hills’s Austin Pohlman 6-2, 6-0. Likewise, in the second and third singles matches, Capers Luke Gilman and Ethan Murphy trumped Windjammers Josiah Krul and Matt Morse (6-0, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-4, respectively).
Camden Hills’ Jared Garske and Colby Arau took the first of the doubles matches over Parker Dinsmore and Matthew Chipman (4-6, 6-2, 6-4), but Cape’s James Salerno and Connor Sullivan grabbed the second doubles match over Josiah Simko and Alex Forcillo (6-7, 6-4, 6-4) to close out the day.
Cape retires for the season at 13-3.
