Two Scarborough firefighters, local members of the Civil Air Patrol, local members of the U.S. armed forces and the owner of Current Publishing will be honored as “real heroes” by the American Red Cross of Southern Maine May 12.
Lt. Jeffrey Rogers and Firefighter Travis Gibson, members of the Scarborough Fire Department, will be honored for risking their lives to rescue two women trapped in a house fire on Gorham Road Nov. 11, 2004. One of the women, Tammy Holbrook, later died, but her mother, Gloria Holbrook, survived.
Maj. Chris Hayden of Cape Elizabeth will accept the award on behalf of the Civil Air Patrol, which is being honored “for its commitment to the security of Maine and the U.S.,” according to a statement from the Red Cross.
Mainers who serve in the U.S. armed forces are being honored for their “courage, dedication and sacrifice … protecting our country and our freedom,” the statement said.
Lee Hews Casler of Scarborough, owner and publisher of Current Publishing and its six weekly papers, the Current, the American Journal, the Lakes Region Suburban Weekly, the Saco-Old Orchard Beach Sun Chronicle, the Reporter and the Sacopee Valley Citizen, will be honored for her “commitment to ensuring that local news is available through local papers.” The company also operates the KeepMEcurrent.com Web site.
The ceremony will be held at the Holiday Inn by the Bay on Thursday, May 12, at a breakfast whose proceeds will benefit disaster relief and emergency preparedness efforts throughout Southern Maine.
