The Maine Department of Transportation will host a public informational meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at Gorham High School on a referendum to reconstruct a portion of Libby Avenue and all of Brackett Road.

The referendum will be on the Nov. 8 ballot in Gorham. Voters will decide whether they want to borrow $1.3 million as the Gorham share of the project. The Town Council unanimously recommended approval of the project.

Town Manager David Cole said the local share would be financed with a 15-year bond. The major portion of the $4 million project will be paid with state and federal money.

“It’s $4 million and climbing with every barrel of oil,” said Burleigh Loveitt, chairman of the Town Council.

The project would rebuild Libby Avenue from Route 25 to New Portland Road and all of Brackett Road from New Portland Road to Saco Street.

Reconstruction would widen the roads, improving visibility for motorists and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. It would include a paved shoulder.
