City councilors added four roads to the map this week.

At a meeting Monday night, the City Council voted, 7-0, to accept Wilson Drive, Grandview Drive, Brydon Way and Dale Avenue as public streets. All four streets had been built as part of housing developments and were being maintained by the developers until all of the city-required improvements, such as sewer lines, storm drains and in some cases, sidewalks had been completed.

Because the roads have not been accepted as city streets, the developers of each project are responsible for providing all services to residents living there, said City Administrator Jerre Bryant. Once the roads become city streets, the city will assume the responsibility for maintenance, snow removal and in most cases, curbside trash collection.

Even after they become city streets, the city will not be picking up trash on Grandview Drive and Brydon Way. Bryant explained the development there is a condominium development, and by ordinance, the city does not pick up trash at condominium developments. The city will provide all other services on the roads and will be picking up the trash on Wilson Drive and Dale Avenue, Bryant added.

The roads will not become city streets until the council holds a second vote to approve them at its next meeting, scheduled for Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. in room 114 of Westbrook High School.

In other news, on its second vote on the matter, the council voted 7-0 in favor of the new police contracts. The vote by the council to approve the two three-year contracts covering the years 2002-2008, means the contracts will now go into effect, putting a close to a contract dispute that stretched over three years.
