Classes to clash again
Cape Elizabeth’s hockey squad will square off against the skaters from Cheverus again this year as part of “A Day of Hockey” on Feb. 19 at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The event, which also includes a Portland Pirates game and periods of open skating, raises money for the Barbara Bush Children’s Fund at Maine Medical Center. The Capers, defending Class B state champs, will take on the Stags, last season’s Class A champs, at noon.
Youth lacrosse registration
Registrations are currently being accepted for Scarborough Youth Lacrosse, which begins practices in April. Both boys (three teams between grades 1 and 6) and girls (two teams between grades 3 and 6) squads will be fielded by SYL. Registration can be done online at www.scarboroughlacrosse.com, and those received by Mar. 5 will avoid a late fee. No registrations will be accepted after Mar. 19. Pizza sales to help girls hockey
The Flatbread Company will donate $3.50 for every large pizza ordered from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, to help the Scarborough High School girls ice hockey program. The restaurant is located at 72 Commercial St. in Portland (telephone: 772-8777), with its entrance facing the Casco Bay Lines ferry terminal. High school lacrosse registration
Gorham Sports Center is now accepting pre-registrations for the last session of high school lacrosse for boys and girls. The five-week session held on Wednesdays will be a team/league format with a set game schedule. Pre-registering is strongly encouraged, as payment will be required to reserve either a team slot or an individual player slot on a first-come, first-served basis. The girls play later in the afternoon and early evening with boys playing later in the evening. The deadline for pre-registering is Friday, Feb. 17, with league play beginning on Feb. 22. Diamond fever
The University of Southern Maine baseball staff will hold pitching, hitting and defense clinics on consecutive Sundays, Mar. 5 and 12, at the Costello Fieldhouse on the school’s Gorham campus. The clinics are open to players ages 8 to 18, with pitching and defense the focus from 9 a.m. to noon and hitting from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost for each session is $30, while a full day is $50. Legion ball blood drive
The Libby-Mitchell American Legion Post 76 baseball team will hold its sixth annual Red Cross blood drive Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006 from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Scarborough police station. The team is again shooting for the state record for the most successful donors for a team and town of our size in the state.
