The Western Maine Conference held its annual Basketball Awards Night last Monday, Mar. 9, and followed that up with senior girls and boys all-star games on Tuesday the 10th. Both events took place at Southern Maine Community College (with the assistance of Matt Richards, Director of Athletics at SMCC, and students in the Sports Management program there.)
The WMC recognized a number of teams, coaches and players Monday night for their contributions to the 2014-15 season. The Gray-New Gloucester girls (and their head coach Mike Andreasen) were named Class A/B Conference Champs, while Cape Elizabeth (coached by Jim Ray), Falmouth (David Halligan) and Yarmouth (Adam Smith) split the honor on the boys’ side.
Among the other accolades bestowed were the Robert E. Butler Awards for leadership, sportsmanship, citizenship, commitment and performance. GNG’s Maria Valente won the girls’ plaque (Greely’s Ashley Storey and Lake Region’s Sara Hancock were the other two nominees) and Falmouth’s Jack Simonds took home the boys’ (over Adam Labrie of Yarmouth and Alan Young of Poland).

As for the results of the games: Mike Andreasen’s white-jerseyed team won the girls game, 57-47, while Jim Ray’s dark-jerseyed boys took their matchup by 12.
