In the middle of winter, some of us are in a “cooking slump” and may decide that a cup of soup is all we need for a meal. Maybe it’s just too much work to prepare a healthy lunch or we are unable to do so for health reasons. Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone cook for you?
For decades, Southern Maine Agency on Aging has been providing nutritious home-delivered meals to homebound older adults in York and Cumberland counties. Those who qualify for the Meals on Wheels program are 60 or older, primarily homebound or getting out with difficulty, unable to regularly prepare nutritious meals and at home during the delivery time frame.
Sometimes a temporary health problem is all it takes to disrupt the normal cooking routine, just when good nutrition is necessary to heal and recover from surgery or illness. Meals on Wheels can help, even on a short-term basis.
The program provides up to five meals each week. Volunteers deliver the meals and usually arrive between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Meals are delivered either frozen or pre-heated based on client request or need.
Meals on Wheels is also a wellness check and friendly visit. Volunteers and staff are trained to make sure that clients are safe when they make their delivery. This brief check helps to provide peace of mind to our clients and their families.

On another note, mark your calendars: March 20 is the date this year for the Spring Senior Expo, hosted by Maine Senior Guide and Beach Glass Transitions. This year more than 40 vendors, 12 speakers and much more will be offered at the St. Maximilian Kolbe Church Hall on Black Point Road in Scarborough. Antique appraisals will be held to benefit the AlzheimerIs Association and a small cafe? will offer meals. This is a great way to spend a day. Yousre sure to find out some useful information and enjoy seeing all the products and services available for seniors.
Also, Medicare seminars and counseling on available resources are held regularly by the Southern Maine Agency on Aging. These events are a perfect way to find out about tax rebates, rent rebates, fuel assistance, food stamps and of course, insurance. On Tuesdays, Feb. 5 and 19, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging will hold a Medicare seminar and counseling for the Lakes Region beginning at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham.
Call the agency at 800-427-7411 to find out about similar events in other areas. Learning about what is available for seniors could result in financial savings, which we all appreciate.
