USM ArtLab starts July 13

The Art Department at the University of Southern Maine is hosting ArtLab, a week of studio art experiences, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. daily during the week of July 13-17 on its Gorham campus.

The class will feature a variety of art media and materials while exploring the “unique offerings” of the university’s Art Department, according to a circular.

The cost $165 per student for the week and includes lunch at the university’s cafeteria. Classes are available for ages 8-18.

Goodwill warehouse tours

Goodwill Industries of Northern New England is now offering behind-the-scenes tours of its warehouse at 34 Hutcherson Drive in Gorham.

Tours will be held between 2-3 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month Upcoming tour dates are July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10. Children are welcome on the tours, but a parent must accompany each child.

Donated items not sold in Goodwill’s retail stores are taken to its “Buy the Pound” outlets in Gorham and Hudson, N.H. They are sold at deep discounts in both locations. If they don’t sell there, they are sorted and processed. Goodwill NNE is one of the largest non-profit consolidators for recycled goods in New England.

Visitors will see how goods are sorted and prepared for aftermarket sales and recycling.

Reflective vests will be provided and are required for all visitors. Each tour is limited to 12 guests.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service reported on June 25 that the U.S. public debt was $18,152,711,443,291.54.

Quint earns degree

Ryan Thomas Quint of Gorham, Maine graduated recently from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. Quint received a bachelor of arts degree in history. He also received the Joseph Carroll Vance Award for excellence in historical research.

He is a 2011 graduate of Gorham High School.
