The Lake Region softball team’s season ended last Thursday with a tough loss on the road to Maranacook in the Class B Western quarterfinals.

The No. 7 Lakers (10-8) gave the No. 2-seeded Black Bears all they could handle during the contest, but in the end, the Lakers came out on the short end of a 1-0 score.

Lake Region pitcher Jesse Hutchins took the loss, despite allowing only six hits while striking out nine.

The game was a tight one all the way through, with the Black Bears finally scoring the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Lakers had a chance to do some damage of their own in the top of the seventh, but weren’t able to score, despite having the bases loaded.

The Lakers were in the quarterfinals thanks to their 4-0 win over No. 10 Poland at home on June 10.

In that game, Hutchins was virtually unhittable, tossing a two-hitter while striking out nine and giving up no walks.

The big inning for the Lakers in this one was the sixth, when Lake Region pushed across three runs, led by Sam Pelletier, who had a huge two-RBI single in the inning.
