Philip and Nancy celebrate 50th
Philip and Nancy Curran hosted 15 houseguests over the first weekend in August as they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their family at their home on Duck Pond Road.
They were special guests at a lobster cookout prepared under a tent by their sons, daughters and grandchildren.
Those present included their daughter, Colleen (Curran) Burnham of Oakland; son Dennis and his wife, Barbara, of Alamo, Calif., and their children, Matthew and Nathan; daughter Martha (Curran) Goyet, and her husband, U.S. Navy Commander Raymond Goyet, of Sinton, Texas; Jenna Goyet, Texas A&M University, Kingsville, Texas, and her friend, Mario Cardona, also of the university; Mark Goyet, Sinton, Texas; and a great grandson Ryan Schumann, Sinton, Texas.
Unable to attend but sending warm greetings from afar were grandchildren Geoffrey Burnham, Charlotte, N.C., and Beth Burnham, who is with the Peace Corps in Guyana, South America; and Dennis Harrington.
Phil and Nancy were married at 7 p.m. on Aug. 8, 1955, at Highland Lake Union Church in Westbrook with a reception at Highland Lake Grange Hall at Duck Pond Corner. They resided the first six years of their married life at Peaks Island followed by one year in Gray, three in Brunswick, and the next 40 at Prides Corner within a mile of where Nancy grew up on Duck Pond Road.
Phil is from Orr’s Island, Peaks Island and Portland. A retired vice president of Casco Northern Bank, he was president of the Maine Conference of the United Church of Christ, a regent of Walker Memorial Library and a member of the Maine House of Representatives. He also served as president of the Westbrook Community Hospital, Portland Transit District, now Metro, and president of the Westbrook City Council.
Nancy worked for the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company and is retired from NYNEX. She was clerk of the Prides Corner Congregational Church for many years. Among her many other activities, she is a member and former president of both the Westbrook Historical Society and Westbrook Woman’s Club.
She served 12 years as a member of the Westbrook School Committee. She was the recipient in 1996 of Westbrook High School’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
As a gift to mark this milestone in their long and busy life together, they were given a trip of their choice, upon which they are still deliberating, by their family.
Amy and Brian engaged
Arthur and Irene Doughty are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Amy Sarah Doughty, to Brian G. Bragg.
Amy is a graduate of Westbrook High School and a 2002 graduate of St. Joseph’s College in Standish. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She is currently employed with the Westbrook School Department.
Bragg is the son of George and Carolyn Bragg of Gorham.
He is a graduate of Gorham High School and is employed by White Rock Outboard in Gorham.
A wedding date hasn’t been set yet.
Prides Corner student wins contest
Lea Hopkins won the 2005 Maine Secretary of State poster contest while a second-grade student of Cathyellen Hebert’s at Prides Corner School.
She is the daughter of Mark and Donna Hopkins.
As part of her prize, Lea’s second-grade class was invited to spend the day in Augusta. She and her classmates viewed the Maine Constitution, which is taken out only on special occasions, and were given a tour of the Maine State Museum.
Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap presented a savings bond to Lea. A classmate, Gwen Forstner, received honorable mention.

Feral felines fundraiser
