McLaughlin, who had lived in Gorham about eight years, leaves a widow, Lorraine McLaughlin. They had been married seven years.

Laughlin had three children, Alyson Knox of Falmouth, Doug McLaughlin of New Hampshire, and Jessica McLaughlin, 16, who is a student at Greeley High School in Cumberland; and one grandson Elijah Knox, 7.

“He could be tough but you always knew he loved you,” said Alyson Knox, remembering her dad.

She said he had a good sense of humor, enjoyed photography and was an antique car buff. He owned several vintage cars over the years. “He enjoyed an old Thunderbird,” his daughter said.

McLaughlin belonged to the Unitarian-Universalist Church on Allen Avenue in Portland and was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. His daughter said her dad was recognized everywhere he went. “He knew everybody,” she said.

McLaughlin had worked as a pipefitter and had owned a Napa store in Yarmouth.
