USM Service Learning Students win prestigious public service award for
their work on a new Center for Grieving Children video.
The University of Southern Maine Kathryn Lasky Award for Public Service
was presented to Media Studies Students Justin Morse, Kati Stacey and
Kelley Swan for their work on a new Center for Grieving Children
informational video as part of their service learning project.
The new video which features current and former families, volunteers and
staff of the Center will be used to assist in the marketing and promotion
of The Center for prospective families who may wish to attend The Center,
as an educational and outreach tool, and as an informational piece for
people considering the many volunteer opportunities that The Center
provides.
“I am extremely proud of this new video. Justin, Kati and Kelley have done
a terrific job in producing a high quality video that sensitively captures
the services we provide by interviewing current and former families, staff
and volunteers.” Said Anne Lynch, Executive Director Dennis Gilbert, their
faculty advisor from the department of Communications and Media Studies
and his team of students have produced a video that will help us in a
number of ways I am thrilled that the students won the Kathryn Lasky
Award for Public Service they truly deserve it.”
The Center for Grieving Children’s mission is to provide loving support to
grieving children, teens, families and the community through peer support,
outreach and education. The Center has served thousands of Maine children
and adults since 1988 through its four major programs Bereavement Peer
Support, Tender Living Care for families facing serious illness, Community
Outreach and Education, and the Multicultural Peer Support Program,
providing collaborative programs with Portland Public Schools for children
from war-torn countries.
