In the New Year the Pond Cove Elementary School in Cape Elizabeth will get a new assistant principal – Theresa Curran, a first-grade teacher at Kennebunk Elementary School.

Her appointment to succeed Julie Nickerson was approved by the Cape School Board at its meeting last week.

Superintendent Meredith Nadeau said Curran has regularly provided administrative support in her current school, which does not have an assistant principal.

Nadeau also said that Curran came “strongly recommended” by the search committee.

Curran earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Southern Maine and also has a bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s College in New York.

Nadeau told the Current that Curran stood out from the other candidates for the assistant principal post because “above all, (she’s) a strong educator. She is deeply committed to meeting the needs of young learners and understands the demands of teaching and learning in the 21st century.”

In terms of what Curran will bring to Pond Cove, Nadeau said, “I think she will bring joy and enthusiasm for teaching and learning, a commitment to helping us continually examine our classroom instructional practices and a dedication to meeting the needs of every child in our schools.”

Curran’s starting salary will be $81,037.
