Amvets Dance

Amvets Post 6, 1095 Lewiston Road, New Gloucester, is sponsoring a public dance from 7-11 p.m., Saturday, June 13. The admission charge is $15 per couple, $8 single, B.Y.O.B. A live country band will perform. Call George Hinckley at 739-0898 for more information.

We All Scream for Ice Cream

Kids can learn how to make ice cream at a Pineland Farms family education program to be held from 10-11:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 23. First, participants will visit dairy cows to learn where milk comes from, then the children will see how ice cream is made.

Another Pineland Farms family education program is Tractors and Trucks, where visitors can learn all about the types of machinery that is used to feed and care for the animals at the Valley Farm. The program takes place from 10-11:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 24.

Tickets to the programs, which are open to all ages, can be purchased for $5 per person at The Market and Welcome Center, 15 Farm View Drive, New Gloucester. Participants are asked to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time to buy tickets and travel to their program. For more information, call 650-3031 or email education@pinelandfarms.org.

Little Deuce Coupe

Do you remember the Beach Boys’ song, “Little Deuce Coupe,” which was released in 1963? It’s about a customized 1932 Ford Coupe, known among hot rod enthusiasts as the lil’ deuce coupe.

If you own a hot rod, muscle car, or antique car, motorcycle or tractor, show it off at the first annual Swap Meet hosted by Amvets Post 6, 1095 Lewiston Road, New Gloucester, on Sunday, June 28. The rain date is Sunday, July 5. Vendor rates are $25 for a 20-by-20-foot area, $15 for a 10-by-10-foot space.

Nature’s Outdoor Classroom

On Saturday, June 27, the mysteries of the Maine woods will be explored and revealed during a two-hour guided hike through the Shakers’ land. Two hikes are scheduled to take place that day – one getting under way at 10:30 a.m. and one starting at 2 p.m. Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village is located at 707 Shaker Road, off Route 26, New Gloucester.

Learn about the indigenous species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, plants, trees, and fungi that occupy the many, diverse habitats of Shaker Village. The hike through hayfields, forest land, and century-old logging trails will include insights to the Shakers’ 200 years of land use and management.

This program is designed for families, young and old, and promises to be a fun and memorable experience in the Maine woods. Dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear for a 3-mile, moderate walk. Bug repellent and sunscreen are recommended. Bring your camera, binoculars and water bottle.

Annual Strawberry Festival

The 40th annual Strawberry Festival will be held on Thursday, June 25, from 6-8 p.m., at the First Congregational Church Vestry, 19 Gloucester Hill Road, New Gloucester. Featured will be delicious strawberry shortcakes made with native berries, homemade biscuits and iconic Hodgman’s Frozen Custard.

Live music will be provided by the Berry, Berry Good Band. There will be a baked goods table and history display pertaining to the 250th anniversary of the First Congregational Church, sponsored by the members and friends of the New Gloucester Historical Society.

On June 4, Sarah MacMath, of Portland, and her 16-month-old daughter Audrey finish up a Rain or Shine Club hike at the Pisgah Hill Preserve, owned by the Royal River Conservation Trust. The preserve’s trailhead, with a parking lot for four cars, is located at 97 Dougherty Road, New Gloucester. The trust invites everyone to join in on their Rain or Shine Club guided hikes to explore their preserves and trails, conducted every Thursday at 10 a.m., free of charge.
