Ed’s note: Citing safety concerns, the town of Raymond last week denied a liquor license to the Derby Fest 2006 organizing committee. The committee was wishing to hold a mini-brew fest during the ice derby at Raymond Beach.
Do you think a brew fest should be added to the list of events for the annual ice fishing derby on Sebago Lake?
Pat Haltizer, 65, New Gloucester
“As long as it’s responsibly run, I don’t see a problem. We’ve had them at our Eagles club in New Gloucester. If they’re going to get drunk, they’re going to get drunk. No matter where they are. At least, this way, they would be in a controlled environment.”
Carol Field, 60, Standish
“I agree with the town of Raymond. At the derby, you have children and you have people that are not drinkers. It also could cause riots because of the alcohol and increase the costs of security.”
Sara Levasseur, 21, Casco
“It’s a good question. I don’t want to say to go ahead and do it, but, you know what, people are going to be drinking anyway. They might as well have it.”
Beverly Prince, 75, Gray
“I don’t think it’s a good idea. There’s too much use of alcohol around kids already. I think they can go one day without it.”
Richard Wellines, 18, Limington
“Well, if the derby is a family event, then I don’t see any problem, simply because everyone will be responsible drinking around their family members. They’re not going to let their drinking get out of hand because they are around family.”
Francis Lund, 71, West Gray
“Too many kids involved. Too much influence on the young people. They already have enough of it. This is supposed to be a family-type thing. People don’t need alcohol to have a good time.”
