Three years ago, a subcommittee of Senior Citizens of the Standish Recreation Committee was organized to find out how could the Standish Recreation well serve its senior citizens.
Six members are now part of the committee; Olga Schimmer, senior representative of the Standish Recreation Committee, Sharon Beety, Beverly Bergman, Alvida Fogg, June Frost, Dotty Hulit, Karen Smith and Betty Ward.
We meet on the last day of the month, and other seniors are invited to attend the meeting. One of our main objective is to put together our Senior Newsletter, which is published every two months and which informs our seniors what is going on.
We have also developed such activities as a Book Club, which meets on the second Wednesday of every month. Watercolor classes meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month. A Computer class meet on Tuesdays. And one of our greatest accomplishments in physical fitness is our newest class – T’ai Chi – which began on Jan. 12 and will be going for six weeks ending on Feb. 16. Fourteen seniors are participating from ages 55 to 92. Other activities have been bus trips and fund-raisers like Bean Suppers and raffles.
Our motto is Stay Active – Physically and Intellectually!
