Yes, folks, I have returned from the two weeks at Maine Medical Center. About 30 pounds lighter, not a whole lot smarter, but tired and weary to the bone. I tend to be a lot more snappy to folks who call me after 9 p.m. or before 9 a.m. – so forewarned, as they say.

All the words of encouragement and prayers must have worked, and whatever it was that I was carrying around wasn’t winter fat or anything very dangerous. Cosmic dust, perhaps. Well meaning friends are now planning my wardrobe not knowing that mentally (as well as realistically) I am a grown up 69 years old – not trying to capture miss teenage Windham of the 50s.

For the first time in a long time, my “cannot do” list is longer than my “to do” list.

I cannot lift more than 10 lbs, drive a car, sit or stand more than 10 minutes at a time, bend, lift, do housework, etc. This will all be over gradually and I’ll be back at the usual routine in a couple of months. It’s longer recuperating now than it was 20 years ago.

Meanwhile, thanks very much for the offers of help and food donations. All is truly appreciated, as my available hours for working have been diminished over my absence and recovery.

Just before I left for this unplanned “vacation/surgery adventure,” Marge Govoni called me about helping publicize the needs of Windham Food Pantry. I am sure that in the excitement of summer, complaining about the heat and vacations, many have forgotten that there are hundreds of Windham residents who depend on the food pantry for survival.

Call Town Hall at 892-1907 to find out details about how you can donate to the food pantry. No one should have to go hungry in this country or town.

See you next week.
