No one said defending a state title would be easy.

The Scarborough High girls lacrosse team, last year’s Class A state champions, was pushed to the limit by Marshwood in Saturday morning’s West A semifinal. The second-seeded Storm emerged with a slim 13-12 victory that set up a regional final against top-seeded Massabesic – a team the Storm lost to by a 5-4 margin on May 28.

The regional championship was scheduled for Wednesday, June 13, in Waterboro. The winner advances to Saturday’s Class A state title game at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland – scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start.

Scarborough’s Natalie Cahoon had four goals in the first half of last week’s win over Marshwood. Chelsea Barrett added four goals in the final 13 minutes of the game to erase a deficit and give the Storm (9-5) the lead.

Ellie Morin contributed to the Scarborough scoring column with three goals and an assist; Marisa Hebert had two scores and four assists; Lindsay Hagerman chipped in with two assists; and Katie Snyder and Brittany Kane both had an assist.

Scarborough goalie Andrea Shryock had seven saves.

“This years team is very different than last year’s,” said Scarborough coach Marcia Wood. “We have a strong defense, but we also (offensively) have many different girls that can score. You can’t just mark out one or two of our players because there are others that will step up.

“Last year the offense did a lot of fast breaking to goal, while this year’s offense is a lot more patient and can take care of the ball better.”

Scarborough made their way into last Saturday’s semifinal thanks to a convincing 11-3 quarterfinal win over Thornton Academy on Wednesday, June 6.

Lindsay Hagerman led the way with three goals and three assists. Marissa Hebert also added three goals and Katie Snyder and Ellie Morin both contributed two goals each.

Flyers stop Cape

Third-seeded Waynflete handed the Cape Elizabeth girls lacrosse team an 11-3 loss in a Western Maine Class B quarterfinal last week.

Cape’s Jill Smith scored all of her team’s goals as the Capers end the season at 6-7.
