Dear Lakes Region Suburban Weekly readers,

What started as the Windham Waves Swim Club four years ago evolved into a Windham Middle School team two years ago and finally, the first Windham High School varsity swim team ever! The cost of maintaining a swim team is sizeable and the parents have shouldered the cost from the start. Starting up a varsity team is especially costly.

The costs of reserving pool time, retaining a coach, providing transportation, gear and swimsuits has increased with the length of the season. The intensive training and practices needed to compete with other Class A high school swimmers in southern Maine has also increased the cost of having a swim team. The good news is if the swim team can stay funded through this, its third year in the schools, it will be eligible for some funding through the school department in 2007 and in future years.

The Windham Swim Boosters will be soliciting donations from local businesses in the coming weeks. We are also planning on having some bottle drives to help defray costs. The Shaw’s Supermarket in Windham has generously offered to host a bottle and can collection at their store on Saturday, January 21.

Please help us to keep the Windham swimmers in the water and be sure to check out some of our meets. They are some of the most exciting high school sporting events around. We have a great coach, Pete Small, and we are looking for more swimmers in both middle school and high school to step up to the starting block!

Sincerely,

Mike Mack
