I’m writing to compliment Sam Clarke. Sam accompanied me on a hike around Chaffin Pond last week, and then wrote the article for last Friday’s edition.

I am very impressed with Sam’s writing! Sam was professional, unobtrusive, and a comfortable hike companion during our time together. I am amazed at the quantity and quality of his perceptions after only a quick hour on the trail. Well done!

As a former classroom teacher (16+ years), I recognize a student with a gift when I see one! Sam told me that he hoped to pursue journalism, and I can see now that he has made a wise career decision already. I look forward to reading his byline in a national publication someday.

Also, I must commend you and Lakes Region Weekly for providing the opportunity for a student like Sam to exercise his developing journalism wings. I have no doubt that his internship will propel him further and faster into the field. Programs like yours are just what Maine needs to encourage our youth toward higher education.

Thank you, and please thank Sam from me, too. I have no doubt that my next hike will be well attended; after folks read Sam’s article they’ll be motivated to share the beauty of Chaffin Pond as described.

Sincerely,
