Maine voters overwhelmingly passed all 2006 ballot initiatives, including a controversial $10 million bond to preserve the native zebra.

While many questioned the zebras’ existence, proponents used the absence of any confirmed sightings to their advantage, convincing voters that it was tantamount to “proof positive,” the majestic creature is in trouble.

They contend that second-hand smoke from passing motorists is forcing many herds northward into Canada, in search of cleaner air.

In his acceptance speech, an emotional Governor Baldacci held back tears as he referenced the plight of the zebra, pledging his full support in “preserving and protecting this magnificent state treasure.”
