The building pictured on the left was known as the Scates Building, which was built in 1903 by local businessman John C. Scates. This building stood on Main Street at the head of Bridge Street and was occupied by various tenants over the years. The city of Westbrook municipal offices were at one time located in this building. The Municipal Court occupied a portion of the second floor for many years until the state of Maine created the District Court system in each county. The Masonic Corporation was the last owner of the building before it was taken by Urban Renewal.

The building was demolished in 1981, despite strong citizen opposition. The present day CVS Pharmacy store and parking lot now occupy the site.
