Baseball
Coach: Mike Fullerton
Last year’s record: 5-11
Key players: Colin Mello, Tucker Miller, Adam Szklany, Brett Bailey, Kenny O’Brien, Drew Gagnon, Nick Burton, Cody Laberge, Ben Noble and Cody Dube
Season outlook: “We will be returning all starters from last season, after a great summer and productive off-season we have the ability to be very competitive in the SMAA,” Fullerton said. “The preseason will be crucial to developing our chemistry as a team and identifying the position players we will rely on throughout the spring. I am confident in our defense and pitching, as long as we stay healthy this will be our strength. However, the conference is going to be tough this year and our offensive production will likely be the key to success in 2010.”
Boys tennis
Coach: Wayne Martin
Last year’s record: 12-0-regular season Western Maine champions, lost in state championship match to Lewiston
Key players: Nate Johnson, Dan Crocker, Dan McGovern, Kurt Stultz, Nick Rallis, Ryan Johnson, Andy Brix, Sean Pennels
Key games this season: According to Martin, the first match of season will be a big test for the Eagles as they take on Scarborough, followed by tough tests against Cheverus and Marshwood
Season outlook: The Eagles have dominated on the court for the last couple of years, and with most of last season’s Western Maine champions returning to the court, Windham should be a factor in the state championship picture again this spring. Martin said the team is anxious to get back on the court and wash the taste of last year’s loss in the state finals out of their mouths. “ (We are) looking to return to the state finals after a heartbreaking loss to Lewiston (last season),” Martin said. “We have six of seven starters returning. Andy Brix and Sean Pennels are also returning players who could step in and make an impact this season.”
Boys lacrosse
Coach: Chris Shorr
Last year’s record: 5-7
Key players: John Skvorak (senior, attack), Joe Parent (senior, attack), Cameron Bodlovick (senior, utility), Donnie Hegarty (senior, goalie), Tyler Winde (junior, midfield), Nick Penna (junior, midfield), Pat Pearson (junior, midfield), Madison St. Peter (junior, defense), Clay Bolduc (sophomore, defense)
Key games this season: Massabesic, Westbrook, Cheverus, Biddeford
Season outlook: Last spring was the first varsity season for Windham boys lacrosse and the team posted a respectable 5-7 record. However, this year, the Eagles are setting their goals higher, they want to make it into the Class A playoffs in just the program’s second season
“Every game is equally important for us this season,” Shorr said. “Last year we were 5-7, if we aren’t able to improve on last season’s record this year, then we’re going to be left out of the playoffs again.”
Shorr said he wants to start a tradition of lacrosse success at Windham. “We had a fantastic first year as a program, but now it’s time to focus on the continued growth and success of the program,” he said. “We lost a great group of seniors to graduation led by all-conference defenseman Jake Greenwood, but we had strong contributions from our juniors and sophomores last year. Highlighted by John Skvorak tallying the third most goals in the state as a junior, and Madison St. Peter dominating in the middle of the field as just a sophomore. Donnie Hegarty, playing lacrosse for the first time, stepped in at goalie and held an unbelievable 78 save percentage as a junior. We’ve also acquired Clay Bolduc, a sophomore transfer from Cheverus, who is looking to fill the hole left by Greenwood’s graduation. The ultimate goal is always for the team to reach it’s full potential. If the kid’s work ethic carries over from last year, and if they show up every day ready to work then we will undoubtedly reach that goal.”
