South Portland roared to a 21-11 first quarter lead and never looked back as the Red Riots scored a 63-47 win over Bonny Eagle in the SMAA season opener for both teams last Friday night in Standish.
The Riots pushed that 10-point lead into a 40-27 halftime advantage with strong play from Kelsey Flaherty (21 points) and Jessica Aceto (16 points).
South Portland also had solid contributions from Christina Aceto (9 points), Erin Stilphen (6 points), Brianna Hawkins (4), Danielle McClusker (4) and Libby King (3).
Scarborough held off Massabesic for a 40-35 win on Friday in Waterboro as the Red Storm and the Mustangs tangled in the SMAA season opener for both teams.
The score was tied at 7-7 after one quarter and the Red Storm led 17-16 at the break as they held off a late charge by the Mustangs.
Christy Manning was high scorer for Scarborough with nine points; Nicole Chaloux-Pinette and Jenn Colpitts added seven apiece; Meg Myers scored five, Reegan Brackett chipped in with three points and Kelsey Griffin, Emily Heath, Caitlin LeBorgne, and Abbey Pelletier all finished with two points each. Sarah Bonenfant also got into the scoring column.
Cape Elizabeth fell behind early and they had to play catch-up the rest of the night as Gray-New Gloucester surged past the Capers for a 56-42 victory in Friday night’s Western Maine Conference game at Gray.
The Patriots took command by out-scoring the Capers 14-3 in the first period. The teams played pretty evenly the rest of the way, but the big lead was too much for the Capers to overcome.
Cape’s Brennan Balfour led the way with 13 points. She was helped by six points from Jackie Moran and five points each from Anna Boulos and Lisa Kaplan. Haley Thompson had four points and Colleen Martin contributed three points.
