Sisters address deaf conference
June L Carrier and her sister, Jane L. Byron, talked last month at the Deaf Women of New England conference in Ogunquit.
The sisters, daughters of deaf parents, were born and raised in Westbrook. At the three-day conference, they told of surviving public schools and the Depression years of the 1930s.
They also talked about laboring during World War II in work usually done by men. Both women worked in paper mills most of their lives. Carrier was a co-founder of Maine Deaf Seniors in 1992. She has served as president and treasurer.
They are crafters and artists. Byron displayed her quilts and Carrier exhibited craftwork and paintings in a booth at the convention.
The sisters, both hearing impaired, married deaf men. Carrier’s husband of 63 years is John Carrier. Jane Byron married William Byron three years ago after her husband of 54 years died. The women have a deaf sister in California.
Carrier and Byron collectively have seven children, 26 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
