Gray on dean’s list

Matthew Gray has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

A sophomore, he is the son of Daniel and Brenda Gray.

Hannah Marie Loven of 139 Forest St. has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Kapothanasis on dean’s list

Christie C. Kapothanasis has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.

A sophomore, she is the daughter of Christo and Kim Kapothanasis. She is majoring in philosophy.

Aceto awarded Kiwanis scholarship

In a recent ceremony at the Westbrook High School awards night, the Key Club/Kiwanis of Westbrook scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to Jason Aceto.

He was awarded the scholarship for exemplifying the ideals of a community-spirited young person with his dedication to the Key Club, serving as president of the club in his junior year. Aceto was also senior class president.

“We wish Jason all the best in his pursuits at the University of Maine in Farmington. Kiwanis is pleased to be able to help by offering this $1,000 scholarship,” John Bernier, president of the Kiwanis Club of Westbrook said.

WEA spring fling

The Westbrook Education Association honored retiring teachers at the organization’s “Spring Fling” on May 11 at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland.

Albert honored with education award

Rebecca Albert, director of library services at the Tilton School in New Hampshire, recently was honored as the winner of the New Hampshire Educational Media Association’s Educational Media Professional award for excellence.

Albert is the daughter of Roland and Janet Albert of Westbrook.

Albert co-founded “Connections,” the New Hampshire Reading Project, founded the New Hampshire Council on Literacy and the New Hampshire Literacy Congress, coordinated the development of New Hampshire’s statewide summer reading program, created and developed the “Kids, Books and the Arts” project, co-founded the Young Adult Interest Group and the New Hampshire Partnership for Literacy.

Police acquire motorcycle

Westbrook Police Department put its latest acquisition into service last week.

Officer Bob Flood said the city bought a 2004 BMW motorcycle with 4,000 miles for $16,000. The motorcycle was previously leased by a town in Pennsylvania as a paramedic bike, Flood said.

Westbrook purchased the motorcycle from Street Cycles in Falmouth and Danny’s Signs of Portland lettered it for the Westbrook Police Department.

Besides Flood, other officers who will ride the motorcycle are Tom Roach, Tom Haskell, Steve Pulsoni and Dennis Ryder.

The motorcycle has a lot of features such as heated grips, adjustable windshield and removable saddlebags. “It’s the only one (police BMW motorcycle) in the state of Maine,” Flood said.

St. Pierre graveside service

A graveside service will be held for the late Rose St. Pierre of Westbrook at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, at Woodlawn Cemetery on Stroudwater Street in Westbrook.

City Band kicks off concert series

In the first of a summer concert series, the Westbrook City Band will play from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5, at Riverbank Park.
