Peaks to Portland
A Pennsylvania man has won the 2012 Peaks to Portland open water swim.
Scott Yeomans, 48, of Bethlehem, Pa., won the race in 45:32.8. Pamela Torrey, 51, of Portland was the top woman finisher, and 11th overall, with a time of 50.14.5.
There were 316 finishers overall for the 2.4-mile swim. Local finishers included: Heather Meehan of Durham (151st), Barry Fussell of Durham (159th), Joe Colman of Freeport (198th), Clifford Ruprecht of Pownal (212th), Jim Balfour of Durham (276th), and Keith Carr of Durham (315th).
Student-athlete honored
Elliott Russell of Freeport was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Scholar-Athlete for the fourth straight year after completing his college career at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Athletes must earn a varsity letter and have at least a 3.5 GPA for the current academic year to qualify.
Freeport’s Dawe part of soccer
all-star game
The 22nd annual all-star invitational senior men’s/women’s soccer tournament will be held Tuesday, July 31, at Westbrook High School. Proceeds from the games will benefit Special Olympics Maine.
The men’s game will be held at 6 p.m. and the women’s game will follow at 8. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. The rain date is Aug. 2.
The teams are made up of some of Maine’s finest high school varsity players from 2011. They will represent the Western Maine Conference and the Southern Maine Activities Association.
Jack Dawe of Freeport will be a member of the WMC men’s team.
Local man competes
at Senior Games
A local man placed in three events at Saturday’s Senior Games in Scarborough.
S.M. Hall of Freeport, competing in the men’s 50-54 age group, finished third in the 200-meter dash, and fifth in the shot put, fourth in the discus throw.
