Over a hundred years ago, one of the thriving businesses in South Windham, was Peabody’s Store. One woman recalls going over there to play with the Peabody girls. There was a storage area over the first floor store where the children played games, held races “until we outgrew it.” Maurice Peabody and his wife operated the store, which sold coal, meat and groceries. The church held choir practice at the house which was attached to the store. Mr. Peabody once held the Boston Post cane in recognition of being the oldest person in town. The old store building (above) stood next to the train depot on Depot Street, South Windham. They also sold grain and lots of penny candy, as recalled by a woman who attended nearby John A.
