Before the revaluation presentation Tuesday, the Raymond Board of Selectmen and Town Manager Don Willard signed papers to finalize the purchase of the old Egypt Road landfill.

More than two decades ago, the town leased the parcel of land to use as its municipal landfill. The landfill portion, which was located on only three of the 83 acres, was closed in the early 1980s and subsequently capped off.

Although Raymond had worked closely with the Department of Environmental Protection to test the site, it was unclear if contaminants might surface in future years and, if that happened, what the town’s legal liability might be if the land were used for a housing development.

After a great deal of discussion at last May’s town meeting, Raymond residents had approved the $100,000 purchase from owner Trudi Lynn Files. At that time, Files had been looking into developing the land.

No plans have yet been made for use of the land.
