What would you do if you discovered that a hard rock quarry – with blasting, rock crushing, heavy trucks, dust, dirt and noise – was planned for your neighborhood? Oh yes, it would include a concrete plant, too.
What would it mean to your right to quiet enjoyment of your property? And what would it do to your property values?
That happened to Windham neighbors living near the corner of Nash Road and Route 302. Last spring, they discovered that Peter Busque is planning just such a quarry.
They banded together and formed the Windham Preservation Committee to oppose Busque’s quarry. They discovered that Windham’s Mineral Extraction Ordinance, under which Busque sought approval for his quarry, is seriously out-of-date and they
drafted an amended ordinance with stricter requirements and no loopholes. The amended ordinance protects Windham residents from the damage similar quarries would do to the quality of life of their neighborhood.
The committee petitioned the Windham Town Council to adopt the amended ordinance and the council chose to let Windham’s voters decide. It will be on the Nov. 7 ballot.
Of course some people, to whom money is more important than quality of life, oppose this ordinance, bitter because they didn’t get to write it. They sound like the Fox complaining that he didn’t get to write the rules for the Henhouse. The amended ordinance is carefully written and fair and should prevent future outrages, such as Busque’s hard rock quarry in residential neighborhoods.
I urge Windham voters to vote FOR the amended ordinance.
