Benefit for missionary team
Proceeds from a bean supper 5-6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6, at First Parish Church will benefit the Honduras Missionary Team 2007.
The menu will include beans, hot dogs, chop suey, brown bread, cole slaw and apple crisp. The cost is $7 for adults; $5, children.
Fun family show
The Centre of Movement School of Performing Arts will present four performances of “Sundown at Heartbreak Mine” this month at 19 State St. (Route 25).
Vicky Lloyd, director at the school, described the production as an “intriguing, interactive melodrama complete with hissing, booing and cheering for the villain and hero.”
Darnell Stuart is the director.
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19; 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 20; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21.

Bartlett again chairs Utilities and Energy panel
Maine Senate President Beth Edmonds has appointed Sen. Philip L. Bartlett, II (D-Cumberland County) to serve as the Senate chairman of the Joint Standing Committee on Utilities and Energy for the 123rd Maine State Legislature.
Bartlett is a lawyer who resides with his wife in Gorham. He is in his second term in the Senate.
The Utilities and Energy Committee is responsible for matters concerning energy policy, including energy resources and efficiency; the electric industry; the natural gas industry; telecommunications; water and sewer utilities; the Public Utilities Commission; the Office of the Public Advocate; and the Energy Resources Council. This is Bartlett’s second term as chair of the committee.
In addition to his duties as senate chair of Utilities and Energy, Bartlett will also serve on the Joint Standing Committee on Health and Human Services.
Youth sewing club returns at Baxter
Students in Grades 3 through 5 are invited to register for the Winter 2007 Session Kids’ Sewing Club at Baxter Memorial Library, 71 South St..
The group will meet on Thursdays from 3:30-5 p.m. beginning Jan. 18. This session will feature punch embroidery projects. A punch needle will be required and can be purchased at the first meeting for $10. A needle can be borrowed for the full session by paying a refundable $10 deposit.

U.S. taxpayer debt
The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Dec. 28 that the U.S. public debt was $8,593,076,179,156.67. The debt jumped up from $8,170,424,541,313.62 on Dec. 30, 2005.
