The Scarborough Red Storm boys and girls swim teams will be heading to the University of Maine Orono on Feb.18 and 19 to swim in the state championships.
The Storm head north on the heels of a successful meet on Saturday and hope to build on that momentum as they go to Orono, with the girls winning the Southwestern championship and the boys coming in a close second.
After a cancellation due to weather, the boys took to the pool Saturday morning, and at the end finished a close second to Greely. The entire boys swimming and diving team had a strong meet, led by junior Nick Twomey, who won the 100-meter backstroke for the Storm and senior Sam Ledue, who set a school scoring record while winning the one-meter dive.
The Scarborough girls captured the Southwestern championship in a tight meet, edging out Falmouth by a mere four points.
The Storm were paced to their third Southwestern championship in four years thanks to several strong swims. Nicole Harmon, Brittanie Bradley, Kelsey Ryan and Christine Beecher won the 200 medley relay for Scarborough and Harmon also took the titles in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.
Harmon’s swim in the backstroke was especially notable, as she finished in 58.7 seconds, a time which broke the conference, state, school and pool record and will put her in the running to be named an All-American at the end of the season.
