PITTSBURGH – Homer Bailey of the Cincinnati Reds threw the season’s seventh no-hitter, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 on Friday night.
The seven no-hitters matches the modern record for most in a season, tying 1990 and 1991. There were eight no-hitters in 1884.

The last no-hitter for the Reds was a perfect game by Tom Browning on Sept. 16, 1988. This was the 15th no-hitter in Reds history.
Bailey (13-10) walked one and struck out 10. He threw 115 pitches and retired the side in order in the ninth.
Bailey, 26, improved to 5-0 in his six career starts with a 1.19 ERA at PNC Park.
Cincinnati, which clinched the NL Central title last Saturday, improved to 95-62. The Reds entered the day one game behind Washington (95-61) for best record in the NL.
The other no-hitters this season were: Philip Humber (White Sox), Jered Weaver (Angels), Johan Santana (Mets), Matt Cain (Giants), Felix Hernandez (Seattle) and a combined six-pitcher effort by the Mariners.
Humber, Cain and Hernandez each had a perfect game.
MARLINS 2, PHILLIES 1: Carlos Lee’s game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Miami to a win at home and eliminated the Phillies from playoff contention.
Steve Cishek (5-2) pitched one inning in relief for the win.
METS 3, BRAVES 1: Lucas Duda’s three-run homer in the seventh gave New York the lead and Jonathon Niese pitched seven strong innings in Atlanta.
Chipper Jones, starting his final regular-season home series before retirement, was 0 for 4 with four groundouts.
CARDINALS 12, NATIONALS 2: Allen Craig matched his career best with four hits to go with two RBI, and Yadier Molina hit a two-run home run as the homestanding Cardinals won a matchup of teams on the cusp of clinchers.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
TWINS 4, TIGERS 2: Ryan Doumit had four RBI for Minnesota, including the go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning as the Twins kept the Tigers from moving closer to the AL Central title.
The Tigers entered the night with a two-game lead on Chicago, but the White Sox ended Tampa Bay’s eight-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory.
ANGELS 7, RANGERS 4: Jered Weaver became the American League’s first 20-game winner and Mike Trout hit a leadoff homer at Arlington, Texas., as Los Angeles prevented the Rangers from clinching a playoff berth.
WHITE SOX 3, RAYS 1: Alex Rios hit his career-high 25th homer and Chicago’s fading playoff hopes got a boost with a win at home, moving the team a game behind Detroit in the AL Central.
YANKEES 11, BLUE JAYS 4: Russell Martin hit a three-run homer and Eric Chavez added a two-run shot at Toronto as New York maintained a one-game lead over Baltimore in the AL East.
Nick Swisher had two hits and two RBI for the Yankees, who have not lost consecutive games since a three-game skid from Sept. 2-4.
INDIANS 8, ROYALS 5: Sandy Alomar Jr. won his first game as the Cleveland manager, Jason Kipnis drove in three runs and Cleveland handed the Royals their sixth straight loss.
