Annual Christmas Tree Lighting
The annual town of Standish Christmas tree lighting will take place at the Municipal Center located at 175 Northeast Road on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 5:30 p.m. There will be live music, Christmas caroling and maybe even a “special guest” or two! Refreshments will be served.
Catch Healthy Habits
CATCH Healthy Habits, a pilot program of Southern Maine Agency on Aging, graduated its first Standish class on Nov. 25. Children in the Standish Recreation K-2 grades afterschool program completed a free eight week class, which included taste testing healthy snacks and studying lifelong lifestyle healthy habits on nutrition and playing active physical games.
According to Sharon Schulberger, CATCH Healthy Habits Coordinator, the group has been invited back to do a winter program with the third-fifth graders. CATCH Healthy Habits is the winner of the 2012 Maine Fitness Award in the Adult category from the Council on Physical Activity. The group also received the Anthem Community Angels Award in 2013.
Open House and Community Forum
You are invited to a holiday open house and community workshop hosted by the Steep Falls Village Master Plan Committee at the Steep Falls fire barn on Thursday, Dec. 12.
The Open House will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. where displays will be set up and you can network with the committee to learn more about Steep Falls and recent planning studies that have focused on the village all while enjoying holiday music and light refreshments.
The Community Forum will be held from 7-9 p.m. The forum will include a presentation and interactive workshop where community members will provide input through keypad voting, small groups, and other activities on what’s important for Steep Falls.

Public Ice Rinks
Now that winter is here, we would like to remind you that Standish has two public, lighted ice skating rinks. The first is located on Route 35 at Johnson Field and the other one is part of the Mill Street Park, located on Mill Street (next to the Steep Fall Market) off Route 113.
Laptop Sale
On Dec. 11, the SAD 6 technology department will be holding a laptop sale for students of the school district. The cost will be $75 and will include the following:
Macintosh operating system software (Mac OS X) version 10.6.8, 13.3-inch display, 2.13 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB Memory, 160 GB HDD, Superdrive records and burns CD & DVDs, and applications like iWork, iLife, Omni Suite, Firefox, and Safari. Charger, duckhead and extension are included.
The machines have been in use at Bonny Eagle Middle School and Bonny Eagle High School by staff and/or students for the last four years. While the machines will be issued in working order, you may find minor external marks are on some of the machines.
Each household will be eligible to purchase one laptop. There are a limited number of laptops available for purchase and they will be sold on a “first-come first-serve” basis. Purchase forms will be available to complete starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Bonny Eagle Middle School Cafeteria, and the sale will begin at 7 p.m. Payment must made at the time of purchase and must be in the form of cash, money order or certified bank cashier check. Personal checks will not be accepted.
Thanksgiving Baskets and Pies
Catherine’s Cupboard served 239 Thanksgiving baskets, including 239 fresh hot apple pies baked at Saint Joseph’s College, Pearson’s Cafe? the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Several businesses and organizations in the community helped with the success of this year’s baskets including Gorham Savings Bank, Key Bank, Standish Family Dental, St. Joe’s students, faculty and staff, and many individuals. Good News Good Deeds, Bonny Eagle Middle School and Boy Scout Troop 875 held food drives and Girl Scout Troop 689 spent a whole day baking cookies.
Aaron and Erika Menard of Steep Falls are excited to announce the birth of their son, Felix Robert, born on Nov. 22. Felix weighed 9 pounds, 8 ounces, and was 21 ¾“ long. Felix was also welcomed by older brother Aaron, 18 months, and Nora, age 8.
The Bonny Eagle High School’s National Honor Society Induction was held on Nov. 12. Twenty seven students from the classes of 2014, 2015, 2016 were inducted. Mr. Anthony Lucchese was the honorary faculty inductee. On Sunday Nov. 17, James Patchell, left, of Bonny Eagle High School and Austin Bell, right, of Gorham High School traveled to Hampden Academy to take part in the 19th Annual All-Star Senior Bowl. Both athletes had been selected to the Maine Soccer Coaches Western Maine Class A Regional All-Star Team for 2013. In the off-season they are teammates on the MCU Portland Phoenix Elite U18 team. During the All-Star soccer game, Patchell notched an assist in the 7-0 victory over the East Team.
Bennett Allen, of Steep Falls, picks out his Christmas tree as Sweetie’s Ice Cream owner Aaron Menard looks on. Sweetie’s Ice Cream, located at the intersection of Routes 11 and 113 will be selling Christmas trees as long as their inventory lasts and are still open for ice cream treats.
A little rain didn’t dampen the spirits on Sunday evening, Dec. 1, for the annual lighting of the Steep Falls Village Christmas tree. The Scannell family led the group in singing Christmas carols and there were lots of yummy treats provided by the Steep Falls Village Improvement Society. Dennis the Elf, who is busy making toys in Santa’s workshop, came all the way down from the North Pole and promptly at 6 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived by fire truck just in time for the countdown for the lighting of the tree.
