Jones starts as new police chief

Daniel Jones began duties this week as Gorham’s seventh police chief.

“Dan started this morning,” Town Manager David Cole said on Aug. 24.

Jones, 50, succeeds Ronald Shepard, who retired Nov. 4, 2014, after 19 years as the Gorhan chief and 42 years in the department. Shepard officially retired last fall on Election Day, when he was elected to the Gorham Town Council.

A law enforcement officer for 25 years, Jones came to Gorham from Kennebunk where he served as deputy police chief.

GHS alumni dinner

The Gorham High School Alumni Association is hosting its 132nd annual meeting and dinner on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Keeley’s Banquet Center, 128 Warren Ave., Portland.

A social hour with cash bar and hors d’oeuvres is set for 5 p.m. preceding dinner at 6 p.m. Cost is $40 per person.

Richman enrolled at university

Gorham resident Mikayla Richman has enrolled at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., for the 2015 fall semester. Richman, a Gorham High School graduate in June, will major in nursing.

Woman’s club to meet

Gorham Woman’s Club will meet on Thursday, Sept. 10, at First Parish Congregational Church, 1 Church St.

JoAnn Means said refreshments would be served at 12:30 p.m. preceding a program at 1 p.m. All members and guests are welcome.

New program at senior center

David Alexander, a member of the Lakes Region Senior Center, recently announced that it has a new program, with up to 10 members reading short memoirs, is proving popular.

The new program is held at 10 a.m. on two Wednesdays monthly with upcoming programs set for Sept. 9 and Sept. 30.

The seniors’ group meets at the Little Falls Activity Center, 40 Acorn St., Gorham.

Ernest to tour in musical

Jessica Ernest of Gorham is set to tour in the upcoming season as a cast member in the musical, “The Producers,” Vicky Lloyd, owner and director of Centre of Movement, said this week.

Lloyd said Ernest, a former student at the Centre of Movement, has performed with regional theater groups across the United States.

She said Ernest would play the role of Ulla in “The Producers,” which will be in Worcester, Mass., with performances Oct. 23-25 and in Orono on Nov. 8.

Fall classes at the Centre of Movement will start on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the Gorham Arts Alliance, 34 School St. in Gorham.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service reported on Aug. 20 that the U.S. public debt was $8,151,300,217,506.79.
