Disability RMS will be adding 50 new jobs at its Westbrook offices.

In addition to the new jobs, the company’s president said Disability RMS would also be exercising its option to lease the vacant first floor of One Riverfront Plaza for future expansion.

Disability RMS President John Roberts said the company signed a major deal two weeks ago that has made it necessary for the company to add the jobs. He said the company has already begun conducting interviews and will have completed hiring by November.

He said the jobs being added were professional ones and would mostly consist of claims professionals, underwriters, and the necessary support staff. The company currently employs 300 people at its Westbrook offices.

“It’s good news for the city,” Roberts said.

Roberts said the company has signed a deal with a major insurance provider in the Midwest, and Disability RMS would be handling that company’s long and short-term disability insurance. Citing client confidentiality, Roberts declined to name the company.

The deal had been in the works for the past two to three months, said Roberts. He said officials from the midwestern insurance company had visited Westbrook, and he believed the new office building and the city itself was a factor in closing the deal.

“The building and the city showed very well,” Roberts said.

The 50 new people being hired will be housed in the company’s current offices on the third, fourth and fifth floors of the building, Roberts said. But with an eye on future expansion, Roberts said Disability RMS would be exercising its option with building owner Tim Flannery to take over the first floor of the building as well.

While the company has no immediate needs for the space, Roberts said he decided to exercise the option to be ready for any possible expansion in the future. “When the next deal comes along, I’ll already have that space,” he said.

Since moving to the city last year, Roberts said Disability RMS has been thriving in Westbrook and he said some of that success is thanks to the new building and the partnership between the company and the city. “I really think the building and the city are part of what that success has been,” he said.
