Sport: Girls indoor track

Coach: Ron Kelly

Last year’s record: During the regular season, Scarborough went undefeated and won the SMAA title. Then for the fourth season in a row, the Red Storm brought home the Class A state championship

Key meets this season: The Red Storm will be focused on the state championship meet once again this year, hoping to bring home a fifth consecutive title.

Season outlook: The Red Storm have built quite a dynasty in indoor track over the past several years, and Scarborough should be a contender for the state championship once again this season. While three members of the state championship 4×200 relay team (Kira Gordon, Alexandria Laniewski and Annie Mills) have graduated, leaving senior Lauren Blaisdell to anchor the relay team, the Storm do return shot put state champion Catie Funk, who returns for her senior season after winning the state championship with a throw of 36-1 last season.

The Storm will also be looking for strong seasons from returning athletes Abby Chick, Jenna Van Dam, Meghan Summerson, Whitney Chamberlain, Melissa Dellatore and Libby Davis, among others.

Kelly said he expects big things from the Storm again this season. “We will continue to be very strong this season. A very good freshman class will add depth to the team in the sprints and jumps,” Kelly said. “The 800 relay and 3,200 relays will be strong. We will need to develop pole vaulters to fill the gap of seniors that graduated. We will be solid in the distance races as well as the long jump and triple jump.”

Sport: Boys indoor track

Coach: Derek Veilleux

Last year’s record: The Red Storm finished second overall at both the SMAA championship meet and the Class A state championship meet

Key runners: Nate Hathaway (distance), Brad Nakanashi (pole vault, 4×800), Sam Chick (triple jump, 800, 4×800), Alex Dulac (high jump), Ian Ramsdell (triple jump, 4X200), Brian Woodbury (shot put), Billy Gorman (shot put), Jimmy Rouse (4×200/sprints) and James Wright (4×800)

Key meets this season: While the regular season meets at the Portland Expo are all important ones, the Red Storm will once again be focusing on the SMAA and state championship meets as the boys look to get over the hump and bring home the state title.

Season outlook: While the girls indoor track squad has run off an impressive run of state titles, the boys team has also emerged as one of the top teams in the state, and will continue to be so this season.

The Storm came just two points shy of winning the SMAA championship, losing to Gorham on the meet’s final event, and Scarborough should have the experience to make up the difference this season.

We have an experienced and talented team returning, with several state meet scorers returning from last year’s state runner-up team,” Veilleux said. “We have a well-rounded squad which will be able to cover most of the events. Staying healthy will be the key to us achieving success at the end of the year. Our goal is to improve each meet and prepare for the championship meets. We have great leadership with all the seniors; they have worked hard for four years and are motivated to capture a state title.”

Last season, the 4×800 team of James Wright, Sam Chick, Brad Nakanishi and Nick Violette won the state title with a time of 8:22.3. All of those runners should have a shot at defending their state title again this season.
