In an effort to raise money for the Cancer Community Center, 11 members of the South Portland High School community have pledged not to shave during the month of November.

Those taking part include an assistant principal, the athletic director, the school resource officer and more, according to Dan Soule, who teaches in the school’s Jobs for Maine’s Graduates program.

The goal is to raise at least $250 for the cancer center, which is located on outer Main Street, Soule said.

“The hope is that people will ask the participants about their facial hair, which will create conversation on why they are doing this, which will lead to conversations on cancer awareness and prevention.”

Each participant in the No-Shave November fundraiser was asked to donate at least $10 or the equivalent of what they would spend on shaving for the month. In addition, anyone else who donated to the cause was entered into a raffle.

And, all those growing out their beards will also be automatically entered into a Best Beard contest, which will be judged by the Jobs for Maine’s Graduates students.

Soule said the No-Shave November was seen as a fun way “to build excitement about the (cancer center) fundraiser.”

He said the event is a continuation of the Cancer Awareness Week the Jobs for Maine’s Graduates students presented and organized at South Portland High in late October.

During that week the high school community raised $500, which was donated to the Maine Cancer Foundation.

The No-Shave November event is slightly more personal, though, Soule said, and is designed to specifically support teacher Scott Keysor, who battled cancer last school year.

“Both of us were going to do No-Shave November regardless. I thought it would be a fun, easy fundraiser for a great cause,” Soule added.
