One of the good things about our town is the way in which volunteer groups respond to citizens.
Due to concerns about older people having to stand in line for a long time at the Food Pantry, the committee which operates this service has expanded their hours on a trial basis, to include “Seniors Only” on Thursday mornings from 9 to 10. It is hoped that this time will be helpful for those who may not be able to wait in line.
The new brochure for spring-summer has been mailed by Windham Parks & Recreation Department and it includes a variety of activities for all ages. If you did not get a copy, additional ones are available at town hall.
It’s raining as I write this and although it sets a pall on the day, we really need to get things dampened down. Grass or woods fires are a real concern at this time of year and can easily get out of hand. Gone are the days of burning a brush pile in the back yard. Always check with the fire department first. There are some neighborhoods in which burning is prohibited because of residents’ medical issues.
Over 400 letters have been mailed to those who are members of Windham High School Alumni Association. On Sunday, Apr. 2, a few of us (Merton and Catherine Johnson, Sandy Vacchiano, Carol Waig, Tammy Haskell, Bud Finley, Bob Miele and myself) collated, folded, taped, labeled and stamped the announcement and reservation form. The banquet is the 20th of May this year; if you or someone you know who attended Windham High School would like information about becoming a member or attending the banquet, please contact one of the above or e-mail me at kso48@aol.com. If you have not joined the Association and paid your dues, you may still attend the banquet but it is by reservation only and the deadline is May 12. This year, the banquet costs $10. All profits are used for scholarships for WHS graduates.
New to Windham? Get involved by finding out about the various groups which help make this town a community. The library has volunteer opportunities or you might join the Friends of the Library which provides support which is not tax-funded. The library staff can fill in the details for you.
Join the Windham Historical Society which meets at 7 p.m. the 4th Monday, monthly at the c. 1833 Town House on Windham Center Road, and provides valuable resources for researchers as well as tours of historical sites each year for all Primary School 3rd graders.
If you are an older resident, you might enjoy the Senior Center at Unity Gardens on Route 115 where each weekday, meals are served at noon for a small cost and many other services are available to area seniors. For details, call Virginia Billings, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 892-3891. You might be interested in volunteering to deliver Meals on Wheels or help in some other capacity.
There’s always something to do in our town.
See you next week.
