The Westbrook police have discovered that the five rifles reportedly found near Saccarappa School on Easter Sunday were stolen in a residential burglary.
Police Chief Paul McCarthy said police have not made any arrests in the case, but the investigation “caught a break” when the owner of the weapons called police to report they were missing.
According to McCarthy, the owner was out of state and returned to find his home had been broken into and the rifles, among other things, were missing. McCarthy said the owner immediately called police, who have processed the crime scene for clues and will continue the investigation.
The guns were of several different calibers and were not loaded, McCarthy said. However, a box of ammunition that matched the caliber of one of the rifles was reportedly found along with them.
The rifles were reported being found in underbrush beside a parking lot at Saccarappa School on Easter Sunday morning. The man who found them told police he took them from the scene to his home and checked with his neighbors to see whose they were. The man’s roommate called police to report the incident a few hours after they were reportedly found.
Det. Sgt. Steve Lyons said the man who took the rifles was the only person who reported seeing them on the school’s property. Police are still investigating that part of the incident.
