As we begin a new school year, we should pause and be thankful for all the wonderful support our schools receive from Mayor Chuluda, the City Council, the School Committee, parents and the residents of Westbrook.

Together, we continue to improve our ability to meet the needs of all students; from students with other languages, students with special needs, students who are homeless, and those with exceptional abilities and talents. Focused work on assessment, curricula and teaching practices has been a critical part of this growth.

At a time when we are loosing many of our valued staff through retirement, we have been fortunate to attract high quality individuals to fill their positions. Many of them have indicated that they applied to work in Westbrook because of our reputation for innovative practices and dedication to educating our students.

We have staff that care deeply about getting our students safely to and from school each day, providing the proper nutrition, and about providing well-maintained and nurturing facilities in which they learn. We are now poised to start our greatest undertaking in this area: the complete renovation or replacement of Wescott Junior High School – and it’s going to happen within the next few years.

I welcome our new employees and wish them a successful school year.
