SCARBOROUGH – After the Windham field hockey team beat Gorham in a prelim game last Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals game against top-seeded Scarborough, Eagle coach Christena Dillon had a good feeling about her team’s chances.
“I’m pretty sure we’re going to win,” she said. “It was only a 2-0 game against Scarborough in the regular season, so if we show up to play, then we can come out on top.”
Well, it turns out Dillon was right.
The Eagles pulled off one of the biggest shockers of the Class A West field hockey tournament in Scarborough on Wednesday evening, knocking out Scarborough 1-0 in penalty corners. The win gives the No. 8 Eagles a measure of revenge for the Oct. 1 loss that Dillon referred to after the game with the Rams.
It is the second year in a row that the Red Storm (13-1-1) have been knocked out of the playoffs at home in the quarterfinals, as Cheverus upset the Storm last fall. The Storm loss also means that the tournament has no clear favorite as the semifinals begin. The top three seeds, Scarborough, Sanford (No. 2) and Cheverus (No. 3) have all been eliminated, leaving the winner of the No. 4 Massabesic vs. No. 5 Marshwood game as the highest remaining seed in the playoffs.
The Eagles and the Red Storm played a defensive matchup throughout regulation as neither team could manage a goal during the first 60 minutes and the two overtime periods that followed.
With the game down to penalty corners, the tension mounted as the first two rounds passed with the game still deadlocked at 0-0.
Finally, in the third round, the Eagles broke through. Sarah Skvorak got a pass over to teammate Katelyn Tucker, who smacked it home to give the Eagles the 1-0 win, with Molly McVetty also scoring an assist on the play. The win moves the Eagles into the semifinals where they will play the winner of the Massabesic-Marshwood quarterfinal game scheduled for Oct. 20.
