Goan honored
in Brunswick
Terry Goan, son of Richard and Gladys Goan of Westbrook, was recently honored as “2009 Citizen of the Year” in Brunswick.
The community police officer with the Brunswick Police Department, Goan was recognized for his volunteer work with Maine Vocational Region 10.
Goan is a 1984 graduate of Westbrook High School. He has three daughters, Heidi, Holly and Heather, all of Brunswick, and is the brother of Greg and Shawn Goan of Westbrook.
Godin earns award
James A. Godin of Westbrook was recognized at an Honors Day ceremony at the University of Vermont in April.
Godin received the Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Science Isola Brown Award.
Ziemann graduates
Marcus Daniel Ziemann received a bachelor of arts degree in May from Bowdoin College in Brunswick.
Seniors’ Cabbage Island outing
Westbrook Senior Citizens on Sunday, July 12, will travel to Maine’s Cabbage Island for a lobster-chicken bake.

Walker going green
How green is Walker Memorial Library? Pretty green, as it turns out.
This year, participants in the Youth Services Summer Reading Program are making their own book bags out of donated T-shirts. The theme of the program is “Be Creative @ The Walker Memorial Library.”
Youth Services Librarian Corinne Henning-Sachs said, “Creativity includes doing more with less. This summer, we have all had to tighten our belts a bit. The plastic bags we usually buy for the summer program are expensive and not eco-friendly. We found a way to combine art and thrift in a way that also promotes family interaction.”
Since students tend to relax their reading skills during the summer months, this library program encourages students to keep up and improve their reading skills.
Children in the program will participate in a variety of fun craft activities as well as read at least eight books this summer. Participants and their families will also enjoy a pizza party.
Everyone is invited to attend two storytelling performances on Saturday, July 18, and Saturday, July 25. All student readers will be eligible for prizes to be given out at the end of the program on Aug. 14. Students are invited to come in and sign up; it is not too late!
