Scarborough vied with 10 other Class A teams from around Maine this past weekend for the state golf crown and emerged victorious. The Red Storm’s 318 stroke total edged them past Greely and Falmouth, tied at 320, to earn them their first state championship ever and cap an undefeated season.

The competition unfolded on the par-72 Tomahawk course at Natanis in Vassalboro, which Scarborough head coach Mike Murphy called quirky.

“You’ve got to keep it in play,” he said. “There’s some hazards, trees in the middle, right off some of your tee balls. You’ve got to bounce back from adversity, and do it quickly.”

“Drew Kane shooting 75 was key,” said Murphy. “Mitchell [Wedge] shot 80 with a 10 on his second hole. That showed a lot of guts, determination, not quitting on himself, not quitting on his teammates, hanging in there mentally.

“That was a big score, because any golfer will tell you, a big blow-up hole, to erase that is easier said than done. Mitchell kept his composure and played on. To come up with an 80 with five over just on one hole is very impressive.”

Kane, Wedge, Chandler Langlois and Braeden Kane have been especially consistent across the season, Murphy said, citing that consistency as central to the team’s stellar record.

“Those four have been the key components to our team, but Nate Roberts had a great year as well. He played in the five-hole, came in and shot an 82. He played in seven of our 10 matches this year.

“Guys like Robbie Hatem, who played in the six-hole all year – I can only take five. He had a nice year for us. I look at the kids who didn’t get a chance to go up there. Ian Trumpler, who’s a freshman, contributed big for us this year. It really was a nice team of 12 players for us.”

Drew Kane, Langlois, Roberts and Elizabeth Lacagnata will all be traveling to Individual States this coming Saturday. Murphy’s expectations for the competition are open.

“It depends on your conditions,” he said. “It could be 43 degrees and the wind blowing. You’ve got to play the conditions.”
