Nontraditional trades event for girls

Firefighting, heavy equipment operation, and bridge building are just a few of the occupations that girls can learn about at Women, Work, and Community’s Totally Trades Conference at the Westbrook Regional Vocational Center on Friday, Oct. 18.

Women, Work and Community is a statewide education and training organization committed to improving the economic lives of Maine people. The organization has been hosting Totally Trades for more than 10 years across Maine. This will be the third time it will be at Westbrook Regional Vocation Center.

Each year, the event brings together professional women who work in various nontraditional occupations to show high school girls the wide range of career opportunities available. Totally Trades will include hands-on workshops and presentations featuring heavy equipment, commercial driving, cable technicians, police, firefighting and emergency services, and more.

The program coordinator, Laurie McDonnell, said Maine’s young women might be surprised to learn about the career opportunities before them.

Area high school students interested in attending must consult with their guidance counselor or advisor. For more information, visit www.totallytradesmaine.org. To learn more about Women, Work, and Community visit www.womenworkandcommunity.org.
